Daniel Webster Women Post Up For Cancer Fundraiser

More news about: Daniel Webster

Nashua - While the Daniel Webster women's basketball team has been busy putting together a solid start to their 2010-11 campaign, their off the court work has payed dividends as well, and for a great cause.

The team recently banded together to help organize, promote and raise over $6000.00 for a friend of the program, 35-year old Bob Barrette, a lifelong Marlboro, Mass. resident, husband and father to two young daughters, who was was recently diagnosed with stage three Colon Cancer.

Barrette underwent surgery on August 25th to remove a baseball-sized tumor while just six days later wife Maeghan Barrette gave birth to daughter Taylin, who joined three-year old sister Brynlee.

Unable to work as he fights the disease and receives continued chemotherapy treatments, Barrette's need caught the attention of the Eagles program. You see, freshman forward Sarah Clark is Maeghan's younger sister.

"When we heard about the Barrettes' situation, our entire team wanted to help in whatever away possible," said Eagles Head Coach Kristin Kunzman. "While we're proud of the entire program's efforts, we're more proud of how Bob and his family continue to pull together and fight through. He's a wonderful man with a beautiful family."

The team joined more than 200 others on December 5th in Marlboro for a fundraising event to assist with the Barrette's financial burdens. The event included raffles, donations, and plenty of food and music.

The women's basketball team meanwhile, went to work procuring prizes donated by families, companies, restaurants and the like, along with "Bands for Bob," similar to live strong bands.

The Eagles surround Bob Barrette during the benefit this past December 5th.

"There's no question our team's contributions helped make the event a success," noted Kunzman. "But the real success remains with the barrette family. They are truly inspiring and our team walked away with a renewed sense of what really matters."

Maeghan and Sarah's father, Dan Clark, who helped orchestrate the event, echoed Kunzman's thoughts. "We thank all the ladies and coaches for all their help and support at Bob's benefit," he said. "It really made a big difference."

The Barrette family continues to accept donations which can be offered to the Barrette Family Fund, c/o Dorothy Clark, 36 Ames Place, Marlboro, MA 01752.
