BRONX, N.Y. - Senior Simona Gordon (Cambridge, Mass.) and junior Courtney Turner (Staten Island, N.Y.) combined for 48 points – including 27 points in the second half – as the Manhattanville women's basketball team snapped Brooklyn College's six-game winning streak with a 77-62 victory over the Bulldogs at the 2010 CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, hosted by Lehman College on Saturday afternoon at the APEX Center.

Gordon and Turner did much of their damage in the second half, when the Valiants outscored the Bulldogs by a 44-27 margin to turn a two-point halftime deficit into a comfortable 15-point victory. Gordon led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 12 of 22 from the field and also adding a career-high seven steals and five assists. Turner had 22 points on a very efficient 7 of 10 from the field and a perfect 7 of 7 from the line to go with six assists.

Senior Carey Hickey (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) also had six assists and added four steals, while junior Kelli Hyjek (Tolland, Conn.) and sophomore Taylor Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y.) led the team in rebounding with six apiece.

Brooklyn was led by Ariel Smith, who scored a team-leading 25 points. However, her teammates all but abandoned her in the second half, as she scored 19 points in the final 20 minutes only to have the rest of the team net just eight.

After heading into halftime down by a pair, the Valiants came out and scored the first four points of the second half to regain the advantage. Although Manhattanville maintained its lead for most of the half, the Bulldogs still managed to keep the game close and were down only two at 54-52 with 8:24 remaining before the Valiants finally pulled away with a decisive 13-0 run.

Turner began the game-changing run with a three-pointer followed up by a conventional three-point play, while sophomore Jen McSharar (Garnerville, N.Y.) had a pair of layups, Gordon added a bucket and Hyjek chipped in with a free throw. Brooklyn, meanwhile, went 0 for 4 from the field and turned the ball over three times during the run.

With the game firmly in control, the Valiants never allowed the lead to get under 10 points, thanks to 6-of-6 shooting from the line by Turner and Hickey down the stretch.

For the game, Manhattanville shot 30 of 64 (46.9 percent) from the field, while Brooklyn connected on 26 of 60 attempts (43.3 percent) – including just 10 of 29 in the second half. The Valiants also took full advantage of a careless Bulldogs squad, turning 27 turnovers into 29 points – including a 15-3 edge in points off turnovers in the final 20 minutes of play.

Manhattanville (5-4) will take the rest of 2010 off, before returning to action on New Year's at 8 p.m. against Marymount University on day one of the Catholic University Tournament in Washington, D.C.
