FARMINGTON, Maine -- University of New England reeled off 34 points over the first 7:59 of the second half to pull away for an 87-37 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference women's basketball action this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.
Farmington (1-6) is scheduled to host University of Maine at Presque Isle Sunday at 1 p.m. with the men's game to follow. The Nor'easters (6-4) are scheduled to host visit Bates College on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) led UNE with 17 points, including 5-of-5 from behind the arc, while Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine) and Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) netted 15 points apiece and Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) added 12 points. UNE buried 16 of 23 3-point attempts (60.9 percent.).
Holding a 37-21 lead at intermission, the Nor'easters cruised through the first 7:59 of the second half, outscoring the Beavers 34-6 over that span.
Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) scored 16 points to lead the Beavers, who were held under 30 percent from the field (26.3 percent, 15-57).
The Nor'easters scored the first 10 points of the contest and led by as many as 17 points in the opening half. Farmington cut the lead to 24-17, but the visitors -- headlined by two Paradis threes --outscored the Beavers 13-4 to take a 37-21 lead into the break.
Bunnell scored five points and Russell canned a 3-pointer for UNE's 10-0 opening stretch in the second half. Russell hit four of her 3-pointers in the second half and Suggs and Bunnell each had nine points as the Nor'easters rolled to the 87-37 rout.
