WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Alverno set a new single-game school record sinking 27 free throws in a 75-68 Northern Athletics Conference victory over host Maranatha Baptist tonight in Watertown, Wis.

The Inferno shot 77 percent (27-of-35) from the free-throw line, compared to the Crusaders' 50 percent (15-of-30) performance, which proved to be a key difference in the game.

"One of the keys going into the game tonight was to get the ball to the rim and not settle against the zone," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "Our consistent effort of going to the rim and getting them in foul trouble really made a difference."

Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and freshman Kristen Speerschneider (New Franken, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) both came off the bench and scored 18 points apiece to lead all scorers.

It was also Speerschneider's career-high, as she shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, tying the single-game school record for free throw percentage. The rookie point guard also had a five steals to lead the Inferno defense that forced 24 turnovers.

Kontowski, who fouled out of the game with over 2 minutes to play, was 10-of-11 from the line and added nine rebounds. Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) also came off the bench and recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists.

"We scored 75 points tonight and had 50 come from our bench, which shows how deep we are. It's not surprising. Those three are all capable of doing that and in some ways they are three of the better offensive players on our team, they just don't happen to start."

Starting point guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee/Bay View) was 6-of-11 from the floor for 12 points and had a team-high five assists for the Inferno (3-6, 2-3 NAC).

"One of the things that will go unannounced in the stat sheet is how well Gabby controlled the game tonight. Her defensive intensity and effort was amazing, and she was a true point guard out there tonight. She pushed the ball down the floor, distributed and got everybody involved in the game. Between her and Speerschneider, Speer took over the scoring role and Gabby took over the leadership of the floor role. That to me was the difference in the game, our point guard play tonight."

Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) was limited to just 18 minutes due to foul trouble, and fouled out of the game with six points, two rebounds and two steals.

Kristin Morrison led the Crusaders (3-5, 0-5) with 17 points while Torey DeLozier chipped in 15.

The Inferno are off until after the holiday break when they take the floor against Marian on December 30 up in Fond du Lac, Wis.
