Brooklyn Downs Penn State Altoona, 75-61

Annville, PA --- Playing in the consolation game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley College, the Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team picked up its first win of the season defeating the Lions of Penn State Altoona by a score of 75-61 earlier today at LVC Gymnasium. The Bulldogs move to 1-2 on the season, while the Lions fall to 1-2 on the year.

Penn State Altoona used an efficient shooting hand and tough defense in the first half to take a 39-34 halftime lead; as the Lions shot 60% from the field, while forcing Brooklyn into 11 turnovers. Tamara Thomas led all scorers in the half with 14 points, while shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor for Penn State Altoona. The Bulldogs were led by seniors Elisha Raiford (Long Island City, NY/William C. Bryant) and Ariel Smith (Newburgh, NY/Wallkill) who scored nine and eight points, respectively. Brooklyn also held the rebounding edge, 20-14.

Brooklyn came out of the locker room determined to take home the victory as the Bulldogs picked up their defensive intensity in the second half; holding the lions to 34.6% (9-for-26) shooting from the field. Trailing by two, 45-43, with 14:43 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs used a 14-2 run to take a commanding 10-point lead, 57-47, with 10:27 left in the game. Brooklyn would never trail in the game again as the Bulldogs would go on to cruise to the 75-61 win.

Brooklyn also continued their dominance on the glass as the Bulldogs outrebounded Penn State Altoona 43-28 for the game. The Lions also turned the ball over 23 times in the game, which led to 29 Brooklyn points. 

Smith led all scorers for the Bulldogs scoring a game-high 20 points, to go along with a game-best 14 rebounds to record the double-double. Smith also dished out seven assists as she would go on to be named to the All-Tournament team. 

Raiford finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kelly Jamison (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds coming off the bench. Junior Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) had a solid day with eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Classmate Lauren Plagainos (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) netted nine points on 3-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

For the Lions, Thomas finished with 16 points, while Courtney Carroll and Marissa Chapman chipped in with 14 and 11 points respectively. Janelle Nardozza dished out a game-high nine assists. 

Brooklyn will be back in action on Tuesday, November 30th, as the Bulldogs will travel to CUNY Athletic Conference and borough rival Medgar Evers College to begin conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
