Burns & Riley Post Double-Doubles in Win Over Seahawks

Newport, R.I.-Rhode Island College sophomore forward Courtney Burns (Rockland, MA) finished with a double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds) as did junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) (15 points, 15 rebounds) to lead the Anchorwomen past Salve Regina, 66-50, at the Rodgers Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

 

RIC (7-2) wins for the fourth time in the club's last five games. Salve Regina (5-2)senior forward Erin Phillips (Morristown, NJ) and RIC junior guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) led all scorers with 19 points apiece.

 

Salve Regina cut into a 19-point deficit with a 21-6 run over nearly 13 minutes of the second half to close within four points, 48-44, with 5:01 remaining. Sophomore point guard Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, RI) scored six of her nine points during that stretch including a pair of free throws. The Seahawks went 6-for-6 from the line during the run.

 

Freshman forward Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, MA) scored six points during that stretch as well, before Burns ignited a 16-4 run for the visitors and another double-digit lead. Burns converted a three-point play when she was fouled making a layup at 4:40 in the second half, and then added a jumper and another layup at 1:17 for a 57-46 lead.

 

 Burns equaled her career-high in points and set a new personal mark for rebounds, while Riley posted her sixth double-double of the year.

 

 The Seahawks also had two players record a double-double: Phillips had 11 boards along with her 19 points and senior forward Victoria Audet (Broad Brook, Conn.), who posted her first career double-double last Saturday against MCLA, made it back-to-back with 12 points and 10 boards.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at UMass Boston on Saturday, Dec. 11.
