Boxers Find Touch Too Late, Fall To Warriors

More news about: Pacific

SALEM, Ore. – Pacific continued to struggle in finding their shooting touch for the first 20 minutes Tuesday, allowing Corban to open the doors and cruise to an 82-61 victory over the Warriors in women's basketball action at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

The Boxers (1-5) were limited to just 9 of 27 from the field in the first half, which allowed Corban to open up a 37-22 halftime lead.  Pacific found their stroke in the second half, hitting 47 percent from the field and 7 of 14 from three-point range.  They shot 38.1 percent (24-63) for the game and 8 of 23 from the arc.

Kristen Corrales (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) led the Boxers with 19 points, which included five three-pointers.  Paige Jensen (So., Bemidji, Minn.) collected a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Brittney Anderson (Jr., Missoula, Mont.) also pulled down 11 rebounds.  Pacific out-rebounded Corban 48-39, but the Warriors forced the Boxers into 26 turnovers.

Tess Bennett led Corban with 23 points and nine rebounds, connecting on 11 of 18 from the field.  Katie Steigleman finished with 18 points while Becky Buhler scored 11.  The Warriors (4-4) shot 44.7 percent from the field (34-76).

Pacific managed just one field goal in the first six minutes of the contest, which allowed Corban to jump out to an early 16-2 lead on a Bennett free throw at the 14:21 mark.  Kaley Adams (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) narrowed the deficit to 11 on a lay-in two minutes later, but Emily Tsugawa scored a three-pointer on Corban's next possession, opening up a 12-5 run.  Ashlyn Roos closed out the streak with a free throw that put the Warriors up 35-12 with 5:49 left in the stanza.

The Boxers hit their shooting stride late in the period, scoring four field goals in the final four minutes.  Jensen's jumper with 51 seconds allowed the Boxers to go into halftime within 15 points at 37-22.

Pacific put together strong shooting from both inside and outside in the second half, but the deficit proved too much for the Boxers to catch up.  Corrales put in a three-pointer two minutes into the frame that brought the Boxers within 14 points, but Corban kept the advantage above 20 points most of the rest of the way.  The Warriors eventually built their biggest lead of 29 points on a three-pointer by Steigleman with 3:40 to go.

Pacific will now take a week off to concentrate on final exams.  The Boxers return to the floor on Sat., Dec. 18, when they begin a three-game southern California road trip at Whittier.
