Chicago Falls in Overtime at #13 IWU

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Hope Schulte's basket with eight seconds left in overtime lifted 13th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University to a 76-75 non-conference win over the University of Chicago women's basketball team Saturday at IWU's Shirk Center.

Schulte gave the Titans (3-2) a 73-69 lead with a three-point shot one minute into the extra period.

A pair of baskets from Morgan Herrick 47 seconds apart gave the Maroons (4-3) their first lead since early in the contest, 75-73, with 1:56 remaining in the game. Illinois Wesleyan closed to within a point when Nikki Preston converted one of two free throw tries at the 1:43 mark.

The score remained 75-74 in favor of the Maroons until Schulte's driving layup with :08 showing on the clock. A Chicago jump shot with three seconds to go fell off the rim.

Illinois Wesleyan led by as many as 11 points in the first stanza before taking a 35-29 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Titans mounted their largest advantage of the second half, 50-41, on a Karen Solari basket with 14:38 to go.

Meghan Herrick brought the Maroons back to even, 60-60, with a pair of foul shots at the 5:14 mark.

The Maroons trailed 68-64 in the game's final minute, but jumpers from Morgan Herrick with :17 remaining and from Taylor Simpson with :04 left sent the game into overtime.

Morgan Herrick led Chicago with a career-best 23 points, while Meghan Herrick (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Simpson (17 points, 12 boards) each posted a double-double.

Britt Hasselbring paced four Illinois Wesleyan players in double digits with 14 points. Melissa Gardner added 12 points, while Olivia Lett and Stacy Arlis finished with 11 and 10, respectively.
