Farmington women's basketball ends skid, rolls by Rivier

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season with a 71-42 non-conference win over Rivier College this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Farmington (1-4) is scheduled to visit St. Joseph's (Me.) College Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game. The Raiders (1-5) are slated visit Nichols College Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) paced the Beavers with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) chipped in 14 points and Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) grabbed 10 rebounds. The Beavers struggled from the field (22-70, 31.4 percent), but made 20 of 25 (80 percent) of free throws. Farmington outrebounded the Raiders 65-36.

Ryan Baker (Whitinsville, Mass.) led Rivier with 10 points with Steph Adams (Nashua, N.H.) grabbing 11 rebounds.. The Raiders hit a dismal 20.3 percent of their field-goal attempts (13-64), including 15.6 percent (5-32) in the opening half as Farmington built a 35-14 lead at intermission.

In their home opener, the Beavers reeled off the first nine points over the opening 4:03. The Raiders briefly cooled the hosts, but another 9-0 span from the Beavers expanded the lead to 18-4 en route to a 35-14 halftime cushion.

All of Norton's point total came in the first half.

Farmington's lead expanded to as many as 32 points in the second half as the Beavers went on to a 71-42 victory.
