Rochester Moves into Wendy's Final for Ninth Straight Year

NORTH CHILI, N.Y.  – Rochester used steady shooting, both inside and out, to earn an 85-51 victory over William Smith College in the semifinals of the Wendy's College Classic at Roberts Wesleyan College Thursday night.

With the victory, Rochester moves into Saturday night's championship game against the winner of Roberts Wesleyan and SUNY Geneseo. Tip-off will be 5:30 pm.  It is Rochester's ninth straight championship game appearance.

The Yellowjackets hit 54% from the floor in the first half, 60% outside the arc (six of 10). Rochester shot 55% in the second half and finished at 54.7% for the game. The Yellowjackets tied a Wendy's Classic record by making 35 field goals.

Rochester's posts did well on the low block. Jodie Luther hit six of nine, Danielle McNabb six of eight, Loren Wagner three of three, Maddy Korber four of seven, and Amy Woods four of seven.

Melissa Alwardt sank two treys. Laney Ming, Michelle Ketcham, Kate Agan, and Kristyn Wright had one apiece.

Luther scored 13 points in 17 minutes. McNabb had 13 points in 13 minutes (and six rebounds). Wagner tallied 10 points in 11 minutes. Ming and Alwardt had five assists apiece. Wright had four.

Kristen Kush scored 16 points for William Smith. Liz Douglass scored nine, and Erin O'Brien had seven.

Rochester was ahead by 10 early and was still up by eight (21-13) with 10:45 left in the half. Ashlinn Barber made a jumper to start an 8-0 run (four of the points by Douglass) and the Herons tied the score at 21-21 on Mollie Danahy's layup with 8:14 left.

Ming sank a three-pointer to set off an 11-0 run by Rochester. Luther and McNabb had layups, Wright made one free throw, then closed the burst with a trey. It was 32-21 with 4:45 left in the half. It was 46-31 at the break.

The win was Rochester's fifth straight (5-1). William Smith is 2-3. The Yellowjackets and Herons will meet again, nine days away, when Rochester hosts William Smith on December 11.
