The Yellowjacket women's basketball team took to the road on Wednesday night, playing their first game in eight days at River Falls to take on a Falcons team that was chosen to finish third in the WIAC in the pre-season poll. The hosts did not disappoint, taking the lead just over three minutes in and never looked back, defeating the Yellowjackets 78-58.
The 'Jackets took the opening tip and scored immediately, opening up a 4-0 lead. Once the game was tied at four the 'Jackets again opened up a lead, this time three points, but that was the last time they would hold the edge and the Falcons would open up a 15-point lead by halftime. The Falcons' shooting from the field cooled off in the second half, but unfortunately so did the shooting for the Yellowjackets and they were unable to close the gap.
Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis.) led the Yellowjackets with 16 points, scoring five of the first seven points in the game and giving the Yellowjackets the lead the two times they held it. Urmanski was 5-13 from the field, including 2-6 from three-point range. She also was 4-5 from the free throw line. Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis.) added 11 points, the only other Yellowjacket to hit double figures. Kelsey Thingvold (Crystal, Minn.) pulled down a team-leading 11 rebounds. Thingvold also led the team with three assists and three steals.
Tiffany Gregorich scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Falcons offensively.
The Yellowjackets (3-2 overall, 0-1 WIAC) will remain on the road, traveling to Platteville to take on the Pioneers on Saturday, December 4, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The next time they will play at Mertz Mortorelli Gym will be on Saturday, December 11, when they host UW-Whitewater beginning at 3:00 p.m.
