HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (Dec. 1) -- The Hendrix College women's basketball team picked up its second win in as many games against Rust College after a 52-40 decision on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors (3-3) used a late surge in the second half to overcome the Bearcats (1-4).
Rust opened the game on top and held a lead for the first 18 minutes until Hendrix sprung for a 10-0 run in the last five minutes of the half, eventually taking a 26-21 advantage into the break. Senior Wyvonne Hawkins ignited the spree with a jumper and first year Jamie Tate capped it off with a last-second layup.
Hendrix would lead the rest of the way, however, Rust stayed within striking distance by not letting its deficit slip past nine points until the last minute of play. Senior Christina Byler and junior Samantha Devlin combined to go 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final seconds to seal the deal.
Byler and junior Caty Hensy led the Warriors with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Byler added a team-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, while Hensy was close behind with eight rebounds. Devlin tallied 10 points and junior Katy Ashley-Pauley finished with a team-best two assists.
The Warriors open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday, Dec. 3 when Colorado College comes to town for a 6 p.m. CT affair at Grove Gymnasium. Hendrix will then host conference foe Austin College on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
