Cortland Remains Unbeaten With 67-55 Win vs. Ithaca

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 16 points and dished out five assists and junior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) tallied 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting as Cortland improved to 4-0 with a 67-55 non-league victory over visiting Ithaca College.
 
Byrne also finished with three assists and three steals, while Cohen hit 2-of-4 three-pointers and all eight of her free throws. Cohen scored 14 of her 16 points and Byrne scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half.
 
Senior Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) added 10 points and seven rebounds and junior Micki Volpini (Newfield) scored nine points. Junior Megan Maycumber (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) led the Red Dragons with eight rebounds and four steals.
 
Freshman Jennifer Escobido (Lisbon, CT/Norwich Free Academy) scored 13 points off the bench for Ithaca (2-3). She made all six of her field goal attempts, including a three-pointer, and recorded three steals and five rebounds. Sophomore Devin Shea (Huntingdon Valley, PA/St. Basil Academy) registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and junior Jessica Farley (South Dayton/Pine Valley Central) finished with five steals.
 
Cortland shot 48 percent from the field, including 44 percent (8-of-18) from three-point range, Byrne, Cohen, Patten and senior Jen Polan (Westhampton Beach) each made two three-pointers. The Red Dragons also shot 83 percent (19-of-23) from the foul line.
 
An early 10-0 run, including Patten and Byrne treys, turned Cortland's 5-2 deficit into a 12-5 lead. Escobido kept the Bombers within 22-17 with a layup at the 3:24 mark of the half, but a Polan three-pointer and two Cohen foul shots pushed the lead to 10.
 
The Red Dragons led 34-20 at halftime and by as many as 22 points at 60-38 after a Maycumber layup with 6:55 remaining. Ithaca got back to within 10 at 65-55 with less than a minute left.
 
Cortland, the defending State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champion, opens conference play on Friday at Buffalo State.
