Huskies Down St. Joseph's College 70-48

GORHAM, Maine   –  Junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead three players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 70-48 win over the St. Joseph's College Monks in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday night at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine.

With the win the Huskies improve to 3-2 overall and retain the possession of the Costello Cup, presented to the winner of the annual contest between the two schools.  Contested over the last 22 years when playing each other, USM has won 13 straight over the Monks and leads the cup series 18-2.  The Costello Cup honors the late Richard "Doc" Costello, former USM Athletic Director and long-time basketball coach.   St. Joseph's College drops to 2-3 with the loss.

Cochran was 4-for-9 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line to lead all scorers.  Sophomore guard Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals, while senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) tossed in 10 points.  Freshman guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) played a steady floor game with eight points and a career high eight assists.

Junior center Ashley Geel (St. George, Maine/Georges Valley) led the Monks with 11 points and five rebounds.  Freshman forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Southern Maine led the Monks by 11, 37-26, at the half, after shooting a solid 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from the field, as Cochran, Jordan and DeMillo scored eight, seven and six points respectively.  The Huskies maintained their double-digit lead to start the second half, but the Monks battled back to within nine three times in the opening 10 minutes.  Geel brought the Monks to within three possessions, 46-37, with 10:49 to play sinking a pair of free throws, but the Huskies responded outscoring St. Joseph's 10-4 over the next five minutes to lead by 19, 60-41, with 5:24 to play.  The Monks were unable to get closer than 19 the rest of the way as the Huskies led by as much as 23 points to close out the game.

Southern Maine finished the game shooting 46.2 percent (24-for-52) from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point range (10-for-22).  St. Joseph's shot just 28.0 percent (14-for-50) from the field and made just five second half field goals on a 5-for-27 (18.5 percent) mark from the floor.

Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).  St. Joseph's travels to Thomas College on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
