Dordt dominates Dutch, 106-58

More news about: Central

Outsized and outshot, the Central College women's basketball team was dominated by Dordt College 106-58 Saturday in the Pizza Ranch Classic at Northwestern College.

Dordt (7-1) placed five players in double figures, including three with 20 points or more. The Defenders scored the game's first nine points and were in control throughout, holding a commanding 48-20 lead at intermission. Dordt shot 58.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded Central 46-28.

Coach Jerry Nikkel said Dordt's size advantage was a key to both statistics.

"There were times when they had five people on the floor who were bigger than any of ours," he said. "We just couldn't keep them away from the basket. That's why they were able to shoot so well."

The already undersized Dutch were again without center Steph Hasken because of illness.

Central (3-3) shot just 25.4 percent from the field. Guard Alyssa Schwartz had 12 points while guard Jordan Waddell had 10.  Forward AJ Baker pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Dutch must prepare to take on Loras College in a women's-men's doubleheader Wednesday at Dubuque starting at 6 p.m. The Duhawks take a 2-2 record into a Monday contest at Carthage College (Wis.). Loras took a pair of lopsided wins over Central last year, but Nikkel is just glad to be dealing with NCAA Division III opponents after facing two NAIA schools at Orange City.

"We know we can play so much better," he said. "Wednesday is the start of conference play and that's a whole different ballgame."
