UW-Stevens Point beats Simpson at Buena Vista Classic

STORM LAKE - Britta Petersen scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds as UW-Stevens Point beat Simpson, 78-60 in the Buena Vista Classic on Friday.

The Pointers (3-1) led by one at the half, but opened up a 10-point lead in the second half. Stevens Point then closed the game on a 15-6 run over the final five minutes.

Stacey Schutjer scored a season-high 18 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Storm (1-3). The junior hit 7 of 10 shots from the field and went 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Kate Nielsen scored 10 points in 15 minutes of play off the bench.

Jeni Hegstrom and Amy Hamilton added eight points each.

Trailing by 10 with 10 minutes left in the game, Simpson climbed back into the contest after a jumper by Kelsie Reeves and a 3-point play by Schutjer.

But Simpson couldn't get any closer the remainder of the contest.

Simpson closes play at the Buena Vista Classic on Saturday when it takes on Iowa Wesleyan  at 2 p.m.
