Despite a record-breaking night from junior guard Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.), the Daniel Webster College women's basketball team dropped a tight 74-70 decision to Endicott College in a regional matchup Tuesday night at the Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Bosques set two all time single game records for the Eagles (1-2), registering a career high 40 points which including a remarkable 10 three-pointers. The 40 points broke the previous single game record of 36 set by Erin Moseley in January 2005, while her 10 treys surpassed the all time record of six set three times, including twice by Bosques last season.
Endicott (3-1) was paced by 20 points from Ashley Vitale (Wilmington, Mass.), who went 9 of 11 from the field while Samantha Crough (Cohasset, Mass.) added a double double of 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in with 13 points and was strong defensively with six steals while adding three boards and three assists.
Junior Sarah Paternostro (Glastonbury, Conn.) was the only other Eagle to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points. Junior Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) added a game high 11 rebounds and chipped in three steals.
Bosques lit up the Gulls for 23 in the first half including six treys and the Eagles shot 52-percent from the floor against just 29-percent for Endicott to lead 39-30 at the break.
But rebounding became a huge factor down the stretch as the Gull pounded the inside glass racking up 20 offensive boards on the night and finished with a 43—33 advantage which helped away the game.
Endicott also sizzled in the second frame, knocking down 56-percent from the field while the Eagles cooled to 37-percent on the way to a 44-31 turnaround.
Endicott opened the second half on an 8-0 run keyed by two baskets from Crough. The rookie would later pull the Gulls ahead for the first time on a layup with 13:38 left for a 47-45 lead.
A Bosques trey would forge a 56-56 tie with 8:34 left but A tip in from Vitale followed by two layups from Vitale combined with two quick Eagle turnovers sparked a game-changing 7-0 run and DWC would pull no closer than two the rest of the way.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday December 4th as they visit Fisher College in a NCAA-NAIA crossover matchup beginning at Noon.
Endicott hosts Emerson College next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
