BOSTON, Mass. -- Down by 14 at the half, the University of New England women's basketball team used a 20-0 run early in the second period to come back and defeat Clark University, 67-58, in the final of the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament played Sunday afternoon at Brown-Plofker Gym.
After the Cougars scored the first bucket of the final frame to push the advantage to 44-28, senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) and junior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) combined to reel off the next 13 points to jumpstart the spurt that gave the Nor'easters a 48-44 edge with 11:04 to play -- a lead they would not relinquish.
Paradis finished with a game-high 20 points to go with eight caroms and four steals, capturing the tournament MVP honor. Bunnell added 17 points (including 11 after intermission), and junior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Both players were named to the All-Tournament team.
During the second-half turnaround, UNE (4-0) limited its opponent to 22.6 percent (7 of 31) shooting from the floor and just 16 points, while forcing 13 turnovers.
Junior Kate Minister (Manchester, England) posted a double-double for Clark with 16 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Kelsey Giedymin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and first-year Emily Reilly (Marlborough, Mass.) tallied 13 points apiece in support. For the game, the Cougars (1-2) out-rebounded Big Blue, 49-38.
The teams traded small leads throughout the first period, before a pair of treys from Giedymin and another by Minister on three consecutive possessions late turned a 31-26 margin into a 14-point cushion just before the break. In the opening stanza, Clark shot 50 percent (17 of 34) from the field and went 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) from behind the arc.
Minister and Reilly found the remaining spots on the All-Tournament team, along with Krisitin Fahey of Trinity College (Conn.). The Bantams took the consolation match against host Emerson earlier in the day, 59-42.
UNE is back in action Tuesday, when Bowdoin College (ranked No. 18 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll) visits the Campus Center for a 6 p.m. contest.
The Cougars are off until next Saturday (Nov. 27, 7 p.m.) when they travel to No. 1 Amherst College.
