LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team dropped its 2010-11 season opener on Friday night 55-52 to Concordia-Moorhead, played at Occidental College. With the game tied and under a minute left Cobbers Maggie Bauernfeind scored the game-winning lay-up.

Trailing by three and winding down to the final minute of regulation, CLU's Meaghan Goodenough hit a three-pointer to knot the game 52-52. On the ensuing possession Bauernfeind scored the game-winning points with 45 ticks left and became the game's leading scorer with 18 points.
CLU's Starla Wright led the Regals with 17 points, including 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and was one board shy of a double-double.
Both teams held sizeable leads with CCM pulling out to the largest margin of the game at 10 points with just over two minutes left in the first half. CLU pulled to within 29-23 at the half and pulled even with the Cobbers just over two minutes into the second half.
Cal Lutheran gained its largest advantage at 45-37 with 9:26 left in regulation following a Donielle Griggs free throw.
In a low scoring affair neither team shot particularly well, but the Cobbers gained small advantages both at the foul line and from downtown. Cal Lutheran shot an efficient 17-of-20 from the charity stripe while Concordia-Moorhead sank 19-of-28 attempts.
However the Regals went just 3-for-18 from three, including a 2-for-15 second half performance that proved costly in the result.
Cal Lutheran took 12 more shots, in large part to a 19-12 advantage on the offensive glass and 46-38 on the boards overall. The Regals defense also forced 18 Cobber turnovers with 15 via steals and a team-high five by Meaghan Goodenough.
Cal Lutheran (0-1) will host a pair of contests on day two of the SCIAC Classic on Saturday, Nov. 20. Occidental will face Concordia-Moorhead at 6 p.m., followed by Cal Lutheran hosting St. Thomas (MN) at 8 p.m.
