Strong Interior Play Leads Oswego State Past D'Youville 68-53

The Oswego State women's basketball team used the one-two interior combination of Kayla Ryan and Colleen McCready  to forge its way to a 68-53 victory Friday night against D'Youville in the opening round of the Max Ziel BasketballTournament.  The win moves the Lakers to 2-0 overall, while the loss drops the Spartans to 0-2.

McCready posted a game-high 19 points along with snatching three steals, while Ryan notched 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jenna Rossi added 11 points off the bench for the Lakers in 23 minutes. D'Youville turned the ball over 32 times leading to 39 Laker points, while Oswego State doubled the Spartans in points in the paint 36-18.

Oswego State led 32-18 at the half before D'Youville closed the deficit to nine, 47-38, at the 10:56 mark of the second half after a Hannah Norton lay-up. The Lakers used an incredible 17-for-17 team free throw shooting performance to stretch its lead to as many as 21 with five minutes remaining in the game. The impressive performance from the line surpassed the previous team record for free throw percentage of 16-for-17 against Cortland set February 25, 2006.

Two Spartans, Kaitlyn Roland and Kay York, posted double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.  Alyx Iverson also recorded seven blocks for D'Youville.

The Lakers host SUNY Cobleskill Saturday at 4 p.m for the tournament championship. The Fighting Tigers defeated Eastern Nazarene 61-55 earlier in the day to advance to the title tilt.
