Elmhurst Women's Hoops Team Falls in OT to Franklin

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season following a 72-70 overtime loss to Franklin College.

Kelsey Monroe splashed home a game-tying three-pointer with just 1.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Franklin (1-0) opened up a quick four-point lead on free throws from Monica Planalp. The Bluejays sliced the lead down to two points after a Kim Schwerdtmann put-back with 36 seconds remaining. After Franklin hit a pair of free throws to take a 72-63 lead, Monroe hit a lay-up with 11 seconds left to bring the Bluejays to within two points.  Franklin's Sarah Condra missed a pair of free throws with less than seven seconds to go, but the Bluejays' game-tying jumper fell short as Franklin held on for the win.

Franklin did not score a bucket in overtime, but the Grizzlies were a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line to earn the victory.  

The Bluejays led by as many as seven points on two occasions in the opening half, but the Grizzlies rallied to take a 32-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. Franklin pushed its lead up to eight points in the second half, but Elmhurst used a 13-4 run to recapture the lead with eight minutes to go. Franklin reestablished a six-point cushion at 60-54 but the Bluejays trimmed the lead down to three-points with 23 seconds left in regulation. After three missed shots and three offensive rebounds, Monroe stepped behind the arc and knocked down the game-tying three-pointer to send the contest into overtime.

In a tightly-called contest, the two teams combined for 63 fouls, 86 free throw attempts, and 53 turnovers. 

Franklin finished the contest shooting 36.2 percent (17-of-47) from the floor, but just 16.7 percent (1-of-6) from downtown. The Grizzlies were solid from the foul line, converting 80.4 percent (37-of-46) of their attempts. 

Elmhurst finished the game shooting 30.3 percent (20-of-66) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from long distance. The Bluejays struggled from the foul line, hitting just 62.5 percent (25-of-40) of their free throw attempts. 

Monroe led Elmhurst with 18 points while shooting 7-of-11 from the field. Meghan Merklein added 11 points and six rebounds while Megan Ney totaled 10 points and four boards. Lauren Rhoads added eight points while Rashida Joiner collected a team-leading seven rebounds.

Condra led all scorers with a game-high 26 points on  8-of-11 shooting from the floor. Twenty of her 26 points came in the opening half. Traci Lippold added 12 points and Planalp finished with 11 for the Grizzlies. 

Elmhurst travels to Loras College on Tuesday, November 23.
