Millikin Scores Overtime Victory at Carroll

The Millikin women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with an 88-82 overtime victory at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. on Nov. 17.

            Millikin scored the games first basket on a Cecily Aldridge three point basket and would hold the advantage until five minutes left in the second half.  Millikin led 38-32 at the half and opened up a 12 point advantage with 13 minutes left in the game.

            Carroll then took advantage of a Millikin dry spell to rally and took its first lead with five minutes left in the game.  The game's final minutes was a back and fourth with the teams exchanging the lead several times.

            Millikin's Beth Wellbaum tied the game at 69-69 with 11 seconds left to play to send the game to overtime.  It was Wellbaum's first basketball of the game.

            Wellbaum then opened the overtime period with a three pointer to give Millikin a 72-69 advantage.  Millikin would never trail in overtime and went on to win 88-82.

            Millikin shot 40 percent from the field, but struggled from the three point line hitting only 29 percent (4-14).  Carroll hit on 42 percent of its shots including 41 percent from three point range.  Millikin won the battle on the boards 56-39.  Millikin committed 24 turnovers while Carroll turned the ball over 16 times.

            Millikin got 27 points and 16 rebounds from Elise Wildman.  Julia Robert also had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Aldridge had 13 points and Crystal Zeigler had 10.

            Carroll got 33 points from Lyndsey Seewald and 21 from Janelle Groer.  Groer had a team high 10 rebounds.

            Millikin is now 1-0 while Carroll falls to 1-1.  The Big Blue will play its home opener on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
