FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Host Fredonia used a 13-0 scoring run over the final six minutes of the first half as the Blue Devils surged past Nazareth in a non-conference women's basketball game, 65-55.
The game marked the season opener for both teams. The Golden Flyers play again Friday and Saturday at the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament. Nazareth plays Middlebury Friday at 6 p.m. and the consolation and final games are Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. respectively.
Nazareth struggled out of the gate by falling behind by 10 points, 16-6, in the first eight minutes. The Golden Flyers battled back with a 16-4 run to take a brief lead, 22-20, following a jumper by Jenee Vanderstyne with 7:17 left in the half.
Fredonia regained the lead on three free throws and a basket by Jamie Warren, but Vanderstyne hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 25-25 with 5:46 to go. That ended up being Nazareth last basket of the half as Fredonia scored 13 straight points to take a 38-25 lead at the half. Anna Riley had a basket and a pair of free throws in the run and Marissa Cussins hit a three-pointer.
Fredonia maintained its double-digit advantage for most of the second half with the Blue Devils' lead growing to 16 points, 60-44, following two free throws by Grace Moore with 4:01 to go.
Junior Ashley Gallagher was Nazareth's high scorer with 12 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds in 14 minutes. She picked up three fouls in the first five minutes of the second half. Vanderstyne scored 10 points with four assists and Brittany TallChief and Brittany Wilson each scored nine.
Nazareth made just 22 of 66 shots from the field, including 4 for 24 from three-point range. The Golden Flyers also were just 7 for 19 from the free-throw line.
Moore and Nicole Calbi each scored 12 points for Fredonia. Liz Wierbinski corraled a game-high 10 rebounds.
