BRADFORD, Pa. – The women's basketball team at Adrian College got their season started on the right foot on Monday as they defeated Pitt-Bradford 59-49.
The Bulldogs scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back as they never lost their lead in the game. Adrian led 29-20 at halftime as they built their lead to 14 at one point before Pitt.-Bradford cut the lead to six. Adrian shot 55.6% from the field, while the Panthers shot 41.1. Turnovers were key to the Bulldogs gaining a lead in the first half as they scored 12 points in the first half alone off turnovers.
Leading the way for Adrian were junior Kellee Wonders (Pittsford, Mich./Hudson) and sophomore Kayla Galecka (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) scoring 12 and 10 points each. Wonders shot 6-of-10 from the field while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Galecka dished out a game-high seven assists, while making Adrian's lone three-pointer of the game. Galecka was also perfect from the line going 3-3. Junior Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville) was a solid 4-6 from the floor to rack-up eight points, while grabbing six rebounds and getting a game-high four steals. Stephany Bohlmann (Webberville, Mich./Dansville) and LaQwana Dockery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) got the starting nod as freshman for the Bulldogs. Bohlmann netted six points and nabbed two steals and two rebounds while Dockery scored five points and grabbed four boards. Bohlmann led all players going 4-7 from the free throw line.
A key for Adrian was their bench, as they outscored the Pitt.-Bradford bench 20-10. Leading the way off the bench were sophomore Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson) and freshman Senneca Scott (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) each scoring six points. Sophomore Jasmine Byers (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) threw in four points while pulling down three boards.
With the victory, the Bulldogs move 17-24 on opening-night since 1970. Head coach Kathy Morris moves to 8-11 in first games of the season.
Adrian will return home to host the third annual Adrian College Tip-Off Tournament. The Bulldogs will play North Park College in the first game of the night on Friday, November 19 at 6:00 p.m.
