Arlington, Va. - (2/12/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (20-3, 8-2) got revenge on their 78-72, January-15 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) loss to Marymount University (15-7, 8-1) and collected their 20th win of the 2024-2025 season with tonight's 76-70 triumph. The Griffins held the lead for most of the first half, but faced a 41-37 (2:01) halftime deficit before wearing down the Saints down with solid defense (Marymount University: 23-of-52, .442 FG), offensive rebounds (13), and plenty of point points in the paint (42). Graduate guard Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) was Gwynedd Mercy University's leading scorer with 23 points, while senior guard Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) headlined a united rebounding effort with eight.
Griffin Highlights
- Junior guard D.J. Johnson (Norristown, Pa.) hit a three to give Gwynedd Mercy University a 21-14 with 11:25 remaining in the first half. Unfortunately, Marymount University turned the corner around the nine-minute mark, 23-21 (9:17), and paced the Griffins to a 41-37 (2:01) halftime spread.
- In the second half, an early surge highlighted by three-point baskets from senior forward Dom Thomas (Mullica, N.J.) (44-42, 18:53) and graduate guard Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa.) (47-45, 16:45) the Red and Gold evened the score with a layup from sophomore forward Travon Mack (Coatesville, Pa.) at 47-47 (15:54).
- From there, the Griffins and Saints only separated by more than three points when the free throw line became the home team's only hope. Harris hit the clinchers with eight second left to play (75-70, 0:08).
- Gwynedd Mercy University shot above 50% in both the first (15-of-29; .517) and second halves (16-of-30; .533). They finished shooting 52.5% (31-of-59).
- The Griffins out-rebounded the Saints 33-23 with 13 of their rebounds coming on the offensive glass. It resulted in 14 second chance points.
- The Red and Gold scored 42 points in the paint and 17 points off 15 Marymount University turnovers.
- Summers added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal to his points, while Marable paired his rebounds with six points, two assists, and a steal.
- Thomas finished with a dozen points, three rebounds, and an assist.
- Senior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the third Griffin in double figures; he scored 13 points while recording a rebound, two assists, and three steals.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action next Tuesday, February 18, when they visit Centenary University (N.J.) for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
