WAYNESBURG, Pa. (February 12) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team led early but fell 78-62 to second-place Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tilt in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
The Jackets now stand at 7-15 overall and 5-12 in PAC play. Saint Vincent moves to 17-5, 13-4 PAC. Waynesburg still remains in contention for the final spot in the PAC Tournament, trailing sixth-place Franciscan by three games in the conference standings with three games to play.
Waynesburg scored the first three field goals of the game and led 8-2 after two minutes of action. Antone Baker's (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) slam dunk with 14:28 left in the first half gave the Jackets a 12-4 advantage.
The Bearcats battled back to tie the game at 17 and 19. Saint Vincent used a 20-5 spurt that put the visitors ahead 37-24 with just over two minutes left in the half. Jalen Goins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) made a late three as the Bearcats closed the opening period with a 39-28 advantage.
Baker began and capped a 7-2 Waynesburg charge at the beginning of the second half to bring the margin to 41-35 five minutes into the second half. The teams traded baskets before the Bearcats embarked on an 18-4 run to pull ahead 64-43 with 7:28 remaining and led by at least 15 points the rest of the night.
Baker scored a game-high 20 points and pulled in nine rebounds. PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) had 12 points and six boards. Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) added nine points and eight rebounds.
Waynesburg finished with a 47-34 edge in the rebounding margin and held a 17-8 advantage in second chance points.
Waynesburg travels to Washington & Jefferson on Saturday.
