MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Eighth-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College won a 20th game for the fourth time in program history following an 81-53 thumping of Benedictine on Saturday at Time of Grace Center.
The Warriors (20-1, 13-1 NACC), who allowed the second-fewest points to an opponent this season, outscored the Eagles 21-4 in points off turnovers.
BenU hit two early free throws to take its only lead of the game and the contest was even at 7-7 with 15:36 remaining in the first half. Both teams continued to exchange baskets and WLC held a 17-15 lead with 11:30 left. Wisconsin Lutheran used a 4-0 spurt to pull in front by six, but Benedictine answered with five straight of its own, as the Warriors led 21-20 with just under 10 minutes to play. WLC answered with yet another 5-0 scoring spurt, and held a 30-27 lead with four minutes left until intermission. The Warriors closed out the final 3:43 of the opening half on a 10-3 run to build their first double-digit advantage and headed into halftime ahead 40-30. Graduate Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) scored 15 first-half points for WLC, which shot an even 50 percent (16-for-32) from the floor.
Wisconsin Lutheran came out hot to start the second half, scoring the first seven points to extend its lead to 47-30 less than two-and-a-half minutes into. The Warriors used a 9-3 run behind five points from graduate Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.) to push their lead to 23, 56-33, with just under 12 minutes remaining. Wisconsin Lutheran's margin dipped below 20 points just once, and it used an 18-5 run to extend its lead to a game-high 31 points with under four minutes left. The Warriors outscored the Eagles 13-0 in points off turnovers in the second half, while limiting the visitors to just 26.5 percent shooting.
Broeckel finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, for his seventh double-double of the season. Goetz added 15 points and dished out a game-high six assists. Senior AJ Vos (Lombard, Ill.) filled up the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Three other players contributed six points each. WLC shot 47.0 percent (31-for-66) from the floor and outscored BenU 13-0 on fast breaks.
Ryan Tucker scored 13 points for Benedictine (8-14, 7-8 NACC), which shot 33.3 percent (21-for-63) for the game.
