Griffins Grind AEC Prize Out of Pacers

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (2/5/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (18-3, 6-2) trailed Marywood University (11-11, 3-6) off the opening tip, but possession after possession the Griffins clawed away at an early nine-point, 14-5 (14:41), Pacer lead. The Red and Gold took their first lead of the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) battle on a layup from graduate guard Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) with 9:15 (21-20) remaining in the first half, but trailed Marywood University at halftime; 32-33 (0:06). In the second half, the Pacers mounted an 11-point lead, 49-38 (14:45), before Gwynedd Mercy University dug themselves out of another hole. This time, the Griffins fed off the play of junior guards, Jalen Snead (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Mazen Sayed (Chichester, Pa.) to rally for an eventual 77-68 (0:55) league victory. Senior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) led four Griffins in double figures with 15 points, senior guard Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) reported a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, and the reserve effort of Snead (13 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 6 steals) and Sayed (6 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal) ensured the win.  

Griffin Highlights

  • Gwynedd Mercy University came from behind to defeat Marywood University despite a struggle from long range (5-of-26, .192). A slight rebounding advantage (42-39) and 19 Pacer turnovers allowed the Griffins to find their way to victory.
  • In addition to his points, Stewart recorded five rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
  • Summers totaled 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal.
  • Marable paired his double-double with three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
  • Snead and Sayed combined for 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and seven steals off the Red and Gold bench.
