Cortland moves into tie for first with ten 3's from Austin

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Isaiah Austin (Albany) tied a school single-game record with 10 made 3-pointers and finished with 40 points as Cortland defeated visiting Fredonia, 90-66, in a SUNYAC men's basketball game. The Red Dragons improved to 11-9 overall and moved into a tie for first in the SUNYAC standings with a 10-3 record.
 
Austin matched the school record of 10 treys set by Dave Maggiacomo at Fredonia in January of 2007. Austin also is the first Cortland player to reach the 40-point mark since Maggiacomo scored 42 points in that contest. Austin finished shooting 10-of-17 from the arc (12-of-21 overall) and 6-for-6 from the foul line, and he also registered three assists.

Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) made 5-of-11 shots and ended with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) registered 11 points, six rebounds and four assists and Joel Davis (Watertown) hit 4-of-6 shots and ended with nine points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.
 
Fredonia (5-14, 3-9 SUNYAC) was led by Brandon Kulakowski with 15 points and five rebounds. Martin Garza and Lamar Lovelace scored 11 points each.
 
Austin hit his first five 3-point attempts, and six of his first seven, to help Cortland build a 29-17 lead with 11:01 left in the first half. He finished the first half 7-of-9 from the arc for 21 points as the Red Dragons took a 47-38 advantage into the locker room.


 
Austin made a 3-pointer with 18:17 left in the game and his ninth of the game with 14:53 remaining. Austin tied the record when he connected from deep with 4:35 left to put Cortland up by 19, and he reached the 40-point mark with a pull-up jumper with 1:48 remaining.
 
Cortland pushed a 49-42 lead early in the second half to 61-44 and led by double figures the rest of the game. The Red Dragons shot 56 percent in the first half and 50 percent in the second to end at 53 percent.
 
Cortland hosts Morrisville Friday at 7:30 p.m.
