Case Western Reserve University senior guard Sam Trunley became the 21st player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points during the Spartans' 92-74 loss at 11th-ranked Emory University on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in University Athletic Association play this season. The Eagles, who were ranked first in Division III earlier in the year, improved to 14-3 overall and to 4-3 in conference play following the victory.
Trunley, who entered the game just one point shy of 1,000 for his career, surpassed the milestone with his first bucket of the game, a step-back jumper with 15:46 left in the first half. He is the first player to score 1,000 points as a Spartan since Cole Frilling reached the mark during the 2021-22 campaign.
Trunley finished the game with 22 points and a team-high five assists with four rebounds and a steal. Senior forward Umar Rashid scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-22 shooting overall with five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Graduate student forward Andy Barba added eight points for CWRU on Sunday.
CWRU never led in the game but remained within striking distance for most of the first half. A jumper by Trunley with 10:07 left in the first pulled CWRU back within three points, 25-22, but a quick 8-0 run by Emory pushed its advantage to 11 points by the 6:30 mark. The Eagles led by as many as 15 points in the period before taking a 47-35 lead into halftime.
After making just two of its 12 three-point shots in the first half, CWRU stayed in the game with stronger distance shooting in the second stanza, making seven-of-15 (46.7%) of its attempts from behind the arc. The Spartans continued to push Emory with threes from Barba and Rashid getting CWRU back to within single digits, 49-41, with 17:56 to play in the game. The Eagles led by 12, 58-46, with 14:04 to go, but a 9-2 run spurred by six points from Trunley, pulled CWRU back within five points, 60-55, with 11:57 on the clock. The Spartans were within six points with 9:30 left, but Emory answered with a 10-3 run to build their lead back to double digits, 75-62 with 6:56 to play in the game. A stretch of five-straight points from Rashid made it an eight-point game again, 75-67, but the Eagles responded with a 15-1 run that put the game out of reach for CWRU.
CWRU finished the game shooting 40.9% overall (27-66), while Emory made 52.3% (34-of-65) of its shots. Emory's Jair Knight finished with 23 points while Ben Pearce added 21 for the Eagles.
The Spartans will be back at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland next weekend to begin a stretch of four straight home games. CWRU will begin the stretch on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against the University of Rochester. Next weekend will mark Throwback Weekend for the Spartans, as the team will be recognizing the rich history of CWRU by wearing the traditional uniforms of Western Reserve University and the Case Institute of Technology. The University will also be kicking off its year-long Bicentennial Celebration with a special pep rally at 3:00 p.m. on Friday inside the Veale Center. More information on all events will be posted to athletics.case.edu later in the weekend.
