Senior post Phil Wallace sank a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime, but Kenyon scored the final 4 points of the game for a 73-70 North Coast Atlantic Conference win on Wednesday in Gambier.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 61-56 lead on a lay-in by senior guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) with just over 5 minutes left in regulation time, but Kenyon rallied to take the lead as Charlie Heywood collected a lay-in, a pair of free throws, and a follow shot to put the hosts up, 62-61, with 3:35 remaining.
Wallace hit the first of 2 free throws to even the game at 62 with 3:29 left, but the Owls retook the lead on Gefen Bar-Cohen's lay-in with 2:33 to go.
Wallace grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with :18 to play, and drained both free throws to even the score at 64.
Each team had a chance to take the lead at the end of regulation. Bar-Cohen's lay-in with less than 5 seconds to play wouldn't fall, and senior wing David Rice got the rebound and was fouled, but Rice missed the front end of a one-and-one with :01.4 remaining.
In overtime, Hinkle hit a pair of free throws for a 70-69 Bishop lead with 1:56 remaining, but Mazeika scored on a putback on the Owls' ensuing possession to give the lead back to Kenyon. Nick Nelson split a pair of free throws to make it a 72-70 game with :15.1 remaining.
Wallace was fouled on an offensive rebound with :04.2 remaining but missed both free throws, and the Bishops fouled Bar-Cohen with :03.1 to go. Bar-Cohen missed the first but hit the second, and with the Bishops down, 73-70, the inbounds pass from freshman wing Jake Lowman went out of bounds untouched and the Owls got possession on the end line. Jackson Maloney was fouled with :01.8 remaining and missed both free throws, but Hinkle's desperation 3-point attempt for the tie was blocked.
Neither team led by more than 5 points during regulation time until fifth-year post Tony Carter buried a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan a 49-43 lead with 13:01 to go. After the teams traded buckets, the Owls scored 6 consecutive points to knot the score at 51, setting up the final minutes.
Hinkle led the Bishops with 19 points. The 19 points raised his career total to 1554, moving him into 10th place on the Ohio Wesleyan career list, passing Mike Kinnaird, who totaled 1546 points from 1975-79.
Carter and Wallace scored 12 points apiece, with Wallace adding a game-high 11 boards. Junior wing Jessee Battle finished with 11 points.
