Warriors Roar Back From 20-Point Halftime Deficit To Squish Fish

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Seventh-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College overcame a 20-point halftime deficit by shooting 72 percent in the second half to earn a 90-78 Northern Athletics Collegaite Conference win over Lakeland on Wednesday at Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (17-1, 10-1 NACC), who outscored the Muskies 62-30 in the second half, overcame a 28 percent first half shooting performance to win its 10th consecutive contest.

The two teams went back-and-forth in the opening two-plus minutes of the game, resulting in a 6-5 WLC advantage before a 6-0 run from LU gave them an 11-6 lead with 14:52 to play. Lakeland used another 6-0 spurt to extend its lead to 21-12 with 10:30 remaining in the first half. The Muskies, who shot 58 percent in the opening half, continued to pull away further using an 11-0 run to build a 34-17 advantage with 5:15 left. Wisconsin Lutheran was unable to cut its deficit to single digits in the final minutes of the half, as it headed to the locker room trailing by a game-high 20 points at 48-28.

WLC came out hot to start the second half, scoring 20 of the first 25 points in the first five minutes to cut its deficit to just five at 53-48. Two three-pointers from graduate Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.) and additional triples from senior AJ Vos (Lombard, Ill.) and graduate Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) helped chip away at the deficit. A layup from Stoltz tied the game at 57-57 with just under 11 minutes remaining, but Wisconsin Lutheran found itself down six, 65-59, two minutes later. A three-point play from junior Ja'Quell Chisom (Milwaukee, Wis.) highlighted a 12-0 run and gave the Warriors their first lead of the second half at 74-71 with 4:29 left. WLC held a seven-point advantage before LU came within four at 80-76. An 8-0 scoring spurt, which was part of a much larger game-ending 24-7 run, put Wisconsin Lutheran in front by a game-high 12 points which sealed the win.

Graduate Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) led five starters in double figures with a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half. He added eight rebounds and three blocks. Stoltz finished with 17 points while recording four rebounds and four assists. Hefle and Vos both added 16 points, with Vos tying for a game-high nine rebounds. Graduate Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) tallied his second career double-double, scoring 14 points while dishing out a career-high tying 11 assists. The Warriors, who distributed a season-high 20 assists and tied a season-high with 12 steals, shot 48.5 percent (33-for-68) from the field and 33.3 percent (6-for-18) from downtown.

Isaiah Hammond scored 19 points for Lakeland (6-12, 5-6 NACC), which shot 49.2 percent (31-for-63) from the floor and 40 percent (10-for-25) from three-point range. The Muskies did not attempt a free throw in the second half after going 6-for-7 from the charity stripe in the first half.
