DUBUQUE, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan gutted out a gritty road win over Dubuque on Wednesday night, pulling away in overtime to secure a 64-57 victory in American Rivers Conference action. The Prairie Wolves erased a double-digit second-half deficit and delivered when it mattered most, outscoring the Spartans 13-6 in the extra period.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nebraska Wesleyan struggled offensively early, shooting just 30.8% in the first half as Dubuque controlled the pace. The Spartans built a 12-point lead early in the second half, but the Prairie Wolves found their rhythm. A key defensive stretch sparked a 10-0 run to finish the first half. The Prairie Wolves utilized the size of Jack Groeteke, as he scored six points on the run. Down by two, with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, the Prairie Wolves again turned to Groeteke and he delivered at the rim. The Prairie Wolf defense got one more stop to earn some bonus time.
In the extra session, the Prairie Wolves wasted no time. Groeteke knocked down two free throws to give NWU the lead, and Carter Glenn followed with a pair of contested three-pointers to put them up for good. The defense tightened, holding Dubuque to just two field goals in overtime, while Seth Newton iced the game at the line.
