ANGOLA, Ind. – In a showdown for first place in the MIAA standings, Calvin upset No. 2 Trine 62-58 to gain sole possession of first place in the conference standings. The victory comes at the midpoint of the league schedule with the Knights improving to 12-6 overall and 7-0 in the MIAA with the win. Calvin has now won 11 straight games including three over D3hoops.com Top 25 opponents. Calvin has also won its last four matchups against Trine at Trine's MTI Center.
Calvin led 34-27 at halftime and stretched its lead to 41-29 early in the second half. Trine went on a 12-2 run to cut the gap to two points at 43-41 with 12:08 remaining. A three-pointer by junior Owen Varnado bumped Calvin's lead to 46-41 but Trine (16-2 overall, 6-1 MIAA) responded with an 11-2 run to take a 52-49 lead. Trine's Nate Tucker capped the run with a jumper to put the Thunder up three with 7:03 left on the clock.
Calvin came back to tie the game 54-54 on a pair of free throws by junior Trevin Winkle. With the game tied moments later, Calvin graduate student Uchenna Egekeze delivered a clutch three-pointer to give the Knights a 59-56 advantage with 2:29 to go. Calvin never trailed again.
Trine crept to within a point at 59-58 but a fadeaway jumper by junior Luka Ressler with 30 seconds left put the Knights up 61-58. Trine misfired on a jump shot in the closing seconds with Calvin grabbing the rebound and sealing the game on a free throw by sophomore Parker Schwartz.
Egekeze poured in a game-high 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting to go with five steals and four rebounds. Winkle had 16 points and nine rebounds and Varnado 13 points and eight rebounds for the Knights.
Tucker had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead Trine while Drew Moore had 12 points.
Calvin was 8 of 15 from three-point range and held a 35-28 rebounding advantage. The Knights shot 48.9 percent from the field while Trine shot 40.4 percent from the floor.
Calvin will host rival Hope on Saturday at 3 p.m. with Trine set to host Adrian at 3 p.m. at the MTI Center.
