DeRegis Gets Hot Late, Helps Knights Past RIT 70-59

Rochester, NY – Sophomore guard Steve DeRegis hit a 3-pointer off a screen from the top of the key with just over a minute to go to all but ice the game for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, as the Golden Knights halted a three-game skid with a 70-59 victory over RIT on Friday night.

The Golden Knights pushed their record to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers dropped to 6-9 and 2-7. Clarkson takes on Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Braeden Burns scored nine points in the first six-plus minutes of the game to give the Golden Knights an eight-point lead in the early going (14-6), but the Tigers responded with a 17-5 run, tapped off by a Zac Ditzel 3-pointer at 8:18, putting RIT up by four. RIT would extend its lead to as many as seven points with a little over three minutes to go in the first half before settling for a four-point halftime advantage.

RIT made sure to utilize its opportunities on offensive rebounds, scoring 12 second chance points off its first seven offensive rebounds. Burns led the Knights with 14 points in the first half, while the Tigers had nine different players make at least one shot, led by Josiah Turner's 11 points.

Clarkson whittled the lead down at the start of the second half, tying the game at 45-45. The two teams traded 3-pointers with Chase Dickens giving the Tigers the lead briefly only to see Steve DeRegis hit a long-range shot at the other end just 17 seconds later. A minute later Matteo Sinon nailed a 3-pointer to put Clarkson up and the Knights would never look back. The margin extended to double figures when DeRegis hit another three at the 3:50 mark. The Knights kept RIT at a safe distance of seven points or more for the remainder of the game, including the key 3-pointer from DeRegis late in the game.

Four Clarkson starters finished in double figures, led by Burns with 15 and Finn Cork's 15, with the latter adding in nine rebounds and three assists. DeRegis made four 3-pointers to score 14 points and Jack Dalgety added 13 points, eight boards, and three assists.

Josiah Turner led all scorers with 20 points, going 8-for-18 from the field. Chase Dickens also scored nine and Zac Ditzel chipped in eight for RIT.
