Guard Marcus Wourman scored a career-high and game-high 21 points for the Hope College men's basketball team, but Calvin University edged the Flying Dutchmen, 65-60, in The Rivalry's 214th game at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope (9-7 overall) slipped out of a first-place tie in the MIAA standings and into sole possession of third place in the league standings with a 4-1 MIAA record. Calvin remained tied with third-ranked Trine University atop the league standings at 5-0.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. at Trine.

Calvin (10-6) outscored Hope, 9-3, over the game's final six minutes.

Sophomore forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart HS) broke a four-minute drought for the Flying Dutchmen by making an off-balance layup with 1 minute, 53 seconds remaining. 

Within two points at 61-59, senior forward Eli Schoonveld (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) gave Hope back possession with a seal. The Flying Dutchmen missed a 3-pointer and layup on the next possession.

A reverse layup from Calvin's Uchenna Egekeze followed, pushed Calvin back ahead four at 63-59.

"It's extremely tough," head coach Greg Mitchell said after Hope's season-high four-game winning streak was snapped. "You're only going to be disappointed if the effort isn't there, and the effort was there. We played really hard. We had several incredible, multiple effort possessions where you need the reward. We've got to hit a few more shots.

"That's how the game goes with two really good teams who play really good D. Scoring's hard. Props to [Calvin]."

The Knights put three in double figures while shooting 45.3% from the field (24-53) and 31.6% from 3-point range (6-19).

Hope shot 39.3% from the field (24-61), 22.7% from 3-point range (5-22). 

Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) surpassed his previous scoring best of 20 points. The junior also recorded three assists and two steals.

Three teammates joined Wourman in double figures. Senior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) collected 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) scored 11 points. Hovey added 10.

Calvin received a team-high 19 points off the bench from Parker Swartz and 16 apiece from Egekeze and Owen Varnado.

Hope still leads the all-time series, 111-103.

Ten points separate the two teams since The Rivalry began during the 1920-21 season The Flying Dutchmen have 14,517 points; the Knights 14,507.
