NEONTA, N.Y. - Jaylen Savage hit his 1000th point milestone in dramatic fashion in a 72-66 win over Hartwick on Friday night.
With the win, Nazareth's record improves to 5-0 in the conference and 10-4 overall, while Hartwick drops to 2-3 in the conference and 2-12 overall.
In the first half, Nazareth immediately jumped out to an 8-0 lead, however the Hawks were able to close the gap around the 14 minute mark at 13-13. The Golden Flyers then found themselves in a bit of a dry spell, while the Hawks went on a 15 point run to hold a 28-13 lead with nine minutes left in the half.
Following a timeout, Nazareth began to chip away at the deficit, and were able to close the gap with 17 seconds left in the half at 36, where the score would stay heading into the second.
Scoring in the first half for the Golden Flyers was Savage and Tyler Putney with 11 each, Luke Insley with six, Solomon McFarlane with five, Jack Broderick with two, and Merritt Holly with one.
Nazareth jumped out in the second half to go up by seven in just over two minutes of play. By the 15 minute mark, the Hawks had closed the gap and gone up by one point. Following the Hawks taking the lead, Nazareth went on a 10-point run to go up by nine with around 11 minutes left to play.
Though Hartwick battled, the deficit was too much for the Hawks to handle and Nazareth won at a score of 72-66.
Savage led the scoring with 31 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. His 31st point was on a free throw with 17 seconds left in the game, which earned Savage his 1,000th career point on the button. Savage is only the 31st player in Nazareth history to earn the milestone.
Putney tallied 19 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Insley and McFarlane each had seven points, while Insley added 10 assists and five rebounds. Holly had four points, eight rebounds, and two assists. J Broderick and Liam Hopwood each added a pair of points, while Broderick had two rebounds and Hopwood had four.
The Golden Flyers will be back on the floor on January 18th at 4 p.m. at Russell Sage.
