Galloway, NJ: The Stockton University men's basketball team defeated Ramapo College in NJAC action, 74-72. The Ospreys snapped an eight-game win streak for the Roadrunners and move to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the NJAC while Ramapo now stands at 12-4 overall and 6-3 in the league.
A first half that saw the game tied eight times saw Stockton go up six heading into halftime. Ramapo led by one 33-32 following a 6-0 run where Jordan Myers scored all six points with 2:17 remaining. Stockton capped off the half with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 39-33 lead at the break.
A 7-0 run to open the second half capped off with a three-pointer from Justin Bladen gave Ramapo a one-point lead, 40-39. The game was tied three different times before back-to-back three-pointers from the Ospreys sparked an 11-0 run to give Stockton a 58-47 lead with 7:36 remaining. The Ospreys carried the lead over the next three minutes as both teams traded baskets before Ramapo went on a 7-0 run. A three-pointer from Peter Gorman started the run while Myers and Gorman each converted a pair of free throws to shrink the lead to just two, 65-67 (2:20). With less than a minute remaining Eriq Campbell scored on a tip-in and converted one of two from the line for a five-point lead with 25 seconds on the clock. Gorman scored a jumper before Campbell tallied two from the free throw line. Gorman once again scored a driving layup for the Roadrunners as he converted on the and-one play, 70-72. The Ospreys missed two crucial free throws with nine seconds remaining, as Ramapo got the ball back with a defensive rebound. The Ospreys were able to get the Roadrunners to turn the ball over which led to a fastbreak basket for Campbell. Gorman scored the final bucket of the game for either team as time expired as Stockton held on for the two-point NJAC victory.
Each team had four players score in double figures in the game as Matthews-Spratley led both teams with 31 points. He finished with seven made three-pointers for the Ospreys along with six rebounds. Campbell tallied 14 points and ten rebounds while Jahmir Payoute and Tayvon Gaither each contributed with 12 points. Stockton shot 41% (26-63) from the field, 33% (7-21) from the three-point line and 75% (15-20) from the free throw line. The Ospreys scored 34 points in the paint while they posted 16 points off of Ramapo turnovers.
For the Roadrunners, Gorman led the team with 19 points while Myers added 14 points, eight rebounds and a team high six assists. Bladen and Shane Rooney each tallied 10 points in the game while Bladen sank two three-pointers and Rooney posted two rebounds, one block and one steal. Anthony Corbo led the team with nine rebounds while adding eight points, two assists, one steal and one block. Ramapo shot 41% (25-60) from the field, 38% (7-18) from the three-point line and 88% (15-17) from the free throw line. The Roadrunner defense forced 13 Stockton turnovers which led to 12 points for Ramapo.
The Roadrunners return to action when they host NJCU on Wednesday, Jan. 22nd in NJAC action at 7:30 PM.
