FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) scored 18 points off the bench to lead nationally-ranked No. 10 Hampden-Sydney College to a 74-69 non-conference basketball road win at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg. The visiting Tigers led 38-35 at halftime and used a late 16-7 run to take a 72-61 lead with just 2:11 remaining en route to their third consecutive victory. All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) had 11 points, and freshman guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) added a career-high 10 points, as H-SC improved to 13-3 overall. UMW dropped to 7-9 overall, and was led by Kye Robinson with a game-high 23 points, including 5-6 three-point field goals.

"Before the game we talked about how important it was to want the battle each and every night," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "It was certainly a battle tonight and it was a lot of fun. Proud of the way we played!"

H-SC, ranked No. 10 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, took an early 11-6 advantage just 4:37 into the contest as Bizzelle—making just his second collegiate start—connected on a three-pointer and followed with a layup, before Brazil and senior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) each made three-pointers, as well. UMW used a 17-11 run to lead 23-22 at 8:54, getting 10 quick points from Robinson, including a pair of three-pointers. The Tigers, however, battled tough over the remainder of the opening half and outscored the Eagles 16-12 to lead 38-35 at halftime. The Garnet & Grey got points from seven different players over the final 8:19, including three-pointers from McGowan (again), Radcliffe and junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville).

H-SC led 42-37 at 16:59 of the second half after layups by freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) and senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC), but UMW tied it at 42-42 with 16:11 remaining as Robinson made a jumper. The Tigers, though, used a quick 10-2 run to lead 52-44 at 12:53 as McGowan connected on his third three-pointer—Radcliffe started the outburst with another three-pointer of his own, while junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) scored inside and Radcliffe added a drive to the basket, as well. The Eagles battled back with seven unanswered points to close to within 52-51 with 10:55 left to play following another three-pointer by Robinson, and the home team was within 56-54 at the 8:00 minute mark. The Garnet & Grey, however, were not done battling and put together the 16-7 run to lead 72-61 with just 2:11 on the clock, getting five points from Brazil, including a three-pointer, four points from Radcliffe, three points from Fernald and two points each from Stickney and Bizzelle—Bizzelle making a steal and left-handed slam dunk. UMW was able to reduce the final margin, aided by two more late three-pointers from Robinson.

Radcliffe led H-SC with his 18 points off the bench, adding five rebounds and two assists. Brazil finished with his 11 points for the Tigers, adding three assists and a game-high three steals. Bizzelle had his career-high 10 points, also adding three assists and a game-high three steals—the latter a career-high, as well. Fernald and McGowan (3-6 3FGs) each contributed nine points off the bench, with Fernald adding game-highs of six rebounds and four assists, while Shryock had seven points and a game-high six rebounds. H-SC shot 47% (26-55) from the field, including 44% (10-23) on three-pointers, and 67% (12-18) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 41-5 advantage in bench points, and a 21-5 advantage in second chance points, out-rebounding UMW 36-24 with 12 offensive rebounds.

Robinson led UMW with his game-high 23 points, including 5-6 three-pointers, along with five rebounds and a game-high three steals. Ulysses Young finished with 13 points for the Eagles, while Zack Blue and Jadon Burgess each had 10 points, with Blue adding a game-high four assists, as well. UMW shot 49% (24-49) from the field, including 41% (9-22) on three-pointers, and 71% (12-17) at the line.

H-SC will play its third-straight game on the road at Randolph College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action next Wednesday night, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Lynchburg.
