LEXINGTON, VA. -- All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 17 points, tying his career-high with eight rebounds, to lead nationally-ranked No. 10 Hampden-Sydney College to a 69-59 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Washington and Lee University on Wednesday night in Lexington. The visiting Tigers led 48-36 with 9:53 remaining, but the host Generals were within 57-55 with 2:57 left to play, before the Garnet & Grey closed the contest on a 12-4 run for the victory—the program's first win in Lexington since February 2, 2013. Freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) added 11 points and freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC) had 10 points as H-SC improved to 12-3 overall, 6-1 in the ODAC. W&L dropped to 3-11 overall, 1-4 in the ODAC, and was led by Connor Amorosi with 16 points and Bryce Breeden with 15 points.
"Proud of the fight we had tonight," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Those guys got it going from three late and I thought we did a good job answering their run. This team keeps finding ways and continues to improve each day."
H-SC, ranked No. 10 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, and W&L played close throughout the first half with 11 ties and 10 lead changes by halftime. The Tigers scored the first five points with a layup by John Campbell and a three-point field goal from Stickney, and took their largest lead of the half at 8-2 after a three-pointer by freshman guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) at 17:43. The Generals answered with a 10-2 run to lead 12-10 with 13:43 on the clock, and the game went back and forth for several minutes before a layup from Stickney had the Garnet & Grey ahead 24-22 at 5:40. W&L led 30-28 following a pair of free throws with 2:30 left in the half, but Brazil took over and scored seven points over the final 1:19, including a jumper with just five-seconds remaining, for a 35-33 lead at halftime.
H-SC continued the momentum to begin the second half, outscoring W&L 13-3, to take its largest lead of the night at 48-36 with 9:53 left to play. Junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) and Stickney each scored four points, freshman guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) had a three-pointer, and John Campbell added a pair of free throws. A trio of three-pointers, including two by Breeden, had the Generals within 50-45 at 7:43, and the home team closed to within 57-55 with 2:57 remaining after two three-pointers from John Loughlin. Brazil answered with a three-pointer of his own at 2:39, starting the game-ending 12-4 run to provide for the final margin of victory … with senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) scoring five late points, including a three-pointer, along with a basket inside by junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) and two closing free throws from junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville).
Brazil led H-SC with his game-high 17 points, tying his career-high with eight rebounds, along with four assists and a game-high three steals. Stickney finished with his 11 points for the Tigers, adding five rebounds and a game-high three steals. John Campbell had his 10 points, adding five rebounds, while making his first collegiate start. Moye contributed nine points off the bench, Shryock had seven points and seven rebounds, and Bizzelle added six points in his first collegiate start, as well. H-SC shot 40% (25-62) from the field, including 23% (6-26) on three-pointers, and 65% (13-20) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 34-10 advantage in points scored in the paint.
Amorosi led W& L with his 16 points. Breeden finished with his 15 points off the bench for the Generals, making 4-6 three-pointers, while Loughlin had 12 points, making 4-12 three-pointers. Colin Ryan contributed seven points and game-highs of 10 rebounds and eight assists. W&L shot 39% (20-52) from the field, including 33% (10-30) on three-pointers, and 53% (9-17) at the line.
H-SC will play on the road at the University of Mary Washington in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, January 18, at 3 p.m. in Fredericksburg.
