Waynesburg drops rematch with Grove City

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 15) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team dropped a 67-55 contest to Grove City in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.

The game was the start of the second loop around the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Jackets fall to 6-9 on the season and 4-6 in PAC action. Grove City remains tied atop the conference standings with a 9-1 league record and 12-3 mark overall.

The Wolverines led for over 39 minutes and never trailed in the ballgame. The Jackets got within two at 9-7 after a Scott Bilovus (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) three and a 11-9 following a slam dunk by Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights). Grove City stretched its lead to double digits (32-18) with a 10-2 run late in the first half and led 33-24 at the break.

A three-point play by Korey Mitchum (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett (Md.)) to open the second half cut the Waynesburg deficit to six (33-27) but that was as close as the Jackets would get as the Wolverines scored the next five points. Grove City led by double digits of the final 15 minutes of regulation. The Jackets cut the margin to 11 midway through the second half before an 8-0 Wolverine run put the game out of reach.

Baker led the charge for Waynesburg with 187 points, six rebounds and three steals. Casey Keesee (Tipp City, Ohio / Bethel) had 11 points and three assists. PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) added 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.

It was a tough shooting night for the Jackets as they finished 36.7 percent form the field, 2-for-18 from deep and 9-for-17 at the foul line.

Waynesburg recorded 13 steals and finished plus-10 in the turnover margin (19-9) in the contest.

Waynesburg travels to Thiel on Saturday.
