HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 18 points to lead nationally-ranked No. 8 Hampden-Sydney College to a 75-68 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) home win past Bridgewater College on Friday night in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. Brazil made 3-7 three-point field goals, while junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) added 15 points (3-4 3FGs) and junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. The Tigers led 38-32 at halftime, and were ahead 68-55 with 2:20 remaining, before the visitors closed the margin late. H-SC improved to 11-3 overall, 5-1 in the ODAC, while BC dropped to 6-8 overall, 1-4 in the ODAC—led by Jordan Cooper with a game-high 18 points.
"Great response from the guys tonight to find a way to get it done," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Every ODAC game is a battle and tonight was no different."
H-SC, ranked No. 8 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, took an early 15-10 advantage at 13:09 as junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville) came off the bench and scored eight-straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers. The Tigers extended the margin to 23-15 with 10:00 on the clock as it was freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC) who came off the bench and scored five consecutive points. The Garnet & Grey maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the half, leading 33-27 at 4:38 following a three-pointer by Radcliffe, assisted by Hamilton Campbell … 35-27 at 3:47 after a slam dunk from sophomore center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA), assisted by John Campbell … and 38-30 at 1:50 following a three-pointer by freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) … toward a 38-32 margin at halftime.
H-SC began the second half by outscoring BC 15-8 to take its largest lead of the contest at 53-40 with 13:22 remaining, getting four points from Fernald, a basket by Stickney, and two three-pointers from Brazil sandwiched around a three-pointer by Radcliffe, as well. The Eagles rallied back with a quick 9-2 run to close to within 55-49 at 7:30, but the Tigers answered back with a 13-6 run of their own to lead 68-55 with just 2:20 left to play—Radcliffe scoring six of the points with an old-fashioned three-point play, another free throw and a slam dunk, as well. The Garnet & Grey still led 71-59 at 1:01 after 4-6 free throws by Fernald, before the visitors made it interesting with a trio of three-pointers over the final 44-seconds … with Brazil (3-4) and John Campbell (1-2) providing for the final margin with 4-6 late free throws.
Brazil led H-SC with his game-high 18 points, including 3-7 three-pointers, adding three rebounds, two assists and a game-high two steals. Radcliffe added his 15 points for the Tigers, including 3-4 three-pointers, adding three rebounds and one assist. Fernald had his 12 points and nine rebounds, adding two assists, while Stickney had nine points. Hamilton Campbell and John Campbell each contributed eight points, with Hamilton adding game-highs of five assists and two steals, and John adding four rebounds and a career-high three assists. H-SC shot 47% (27-58) from the field, including 53% (10-19) on three-pointers, and 58% (11-19) at the free throw line.
Cooper led BC with his game-high 18 points, adding four assists. Maleek Richardson added 14 points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists for the Eagles. Aaron Oates finished with a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, adding game-highs of three blocks and two steals, as well. BC shot 39% (25-65) from the field, including 29% (10-35) on three-pointers, and 80% (8-10) at the line.
The contest had been rescheduled to Friday night due to the Winter Storm Warning in effect for overnight Friday and into Saturday, January 11, when it had been originally scheduled for 2 p.m.
H-SC will play on the road at ODAC member Washington and Lee University next Wednesday night, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Lexington.
