Waynesburg falls at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. (January 4) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team took a 92-72 setback at Saint Vincent at the Robert S. Carey Center on Saturday evening.

The Jackets, who had won back-to-back games to close the 2024 calendar year, fall to 5-7 and 3-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Saint Vincent remains unbeaten at home this season and rises to 9-3, 5-2 PAC. 

The two teams were within two possessions of one another through the first eight minutes of action. The Jackets led 7-5 early and the score was tied at 10 before the Bearcats took a slim edge. Korey Mitchum's (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett (Md.)) lay-in with 12:31 left in the first half put the Jackets within three (21-18).

The Bearcats took advantage of four Waynesburg turnovers during a 14-0 run that gave the hosts a 35-18 edge. Saint Vincent closed the half with a 10-2 run to go into the half with a 55-30 lead.

The Jackets outscored the Bearcats 42-37 but could not work back within single digits. At the 14-minute mark, the Jackets came alive with a 19-4 run. Scott Bilovus (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) sank two three-pointers and Jalen Goins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) added one. A slam dunk by Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) capped the run and brought the score to 74-60 with 8:39 remaining. Saint Vincent's Mike Iuzzolino scored 10 points in the final eight minutes and finished with a game-high 32 points in the Bearcat win.

Baker and Goins each set season-highs in the defeat. Baker finished with 25 points on 12-of-19 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. Goins made three treys on his way to 17 points, along with four rebounds and two blocks. Bilovus added 11 points and three three-pointers. Mitchum had eight points, five assists and three steals.

Jackets held a 37-35 rebounding edge in the ballgame. Turnovers proved costly for Waynesburg as 18 turnovers resulted in 27 points for Saint Vincent. 

The Jackets host Franciscan on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
