LYNCHBURG, Va. -- All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC), senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) and junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) each scored 12 points to lead nationally-ranked No. 7 Hampden-Sydney College to a 78-67 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg. The visiting Tigers led 41-34 at halftime and extended the lead to 58-43 with 11:20 remaining, before the host Hornets closed to within 73-67 with 1:51 left, but the Garnet & Grey closed with 5-6 free throws for the victory. H-SC improved to 10-2 overall, 4-0 in the ODAC, while Lynchburg dropped to 7-5 overall, 1-2 in the ODAC—led by Cole Callaway with a game-high 14 points.

"It was great to be back in action today with the guys," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We brought great energy and togetherness which helped us get the tough road win. Glad we are back at it!"

H-SC, ranked No. 7 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, and Lynchburg were tied early at 2-2 and 4-4 after baskets by Brazil and Fernald to open the contest. The Hornets, however, outscored the Tigers 20-14 to lead 24-18 at 11:27, before the visitors used a quick 10-2 run to take their first lead at 28-26 with 6:24 on the clock following a basket inside by sophomore center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA)—Shryock contributed a three-point field goal, Fernald added a basket down low and junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville) had an old-fashioned three-point play during the outburst. The Garnet & Grey would extend their half-ending run to 23-10 for a 41-34 advantage at halftime—getting six late points from freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC).

H-SC pushed the advantage to 46-36 early in the second half as Brazil connected on a three-pointer, followed by a layup for the 10-point margin at 18:58. Lynchburg was within 46-40 at 17:28 after two free throws from Callaway, but the Tigers answered with a 12-3 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 58-43 with 11:20 remaining. Freshman guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) started the run with back-to-back baskets, followed by two free throws from John Campbell, before Shryock and freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) each made three-pointers. The Hornets closed to within 62-57 at 7:03, but a quick 9-2 run had the visitors ahead 71-59 at 3:53—junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) scoring seven points, including a three-pointer, and Brazil adding a jumper. The home team made a final push and was within 73-67 with 1:51 left to play following a three-pointer by Callaway, but the Garnet & Grey made 5-6 free throws over the final minute to secure the road triumph and provide for the final margin.

Brazil, Shryock and Fernald each led H-SC with their respective 12 points, with Brazil adding two rebounds, two assists and two steals, Shryock adding three rebounds, two assists and one steal, and Fernald adding five rebounds, two steals and one block. Bizzelle finished with nine points and two steals off the bench for the Tigers. Radcliffe and John Campbell each had eight points, with Radcliffe adding four rebounds and John Campbell adding three rebounds and one steal off the bench. Hamilton Campbell contributed seven points, a game-high seven rebounds, six assists and a game-high three steals off the bench. H-SC shot 47% (27-57) from the field, including 28% (7-25) on three-pointers, and 81% (17-21) at the free throw line.

Callaway led Lynchburg with his game-high 14 points. John Henderson finished with 13 points off the bench for the Hornets. Lynchburg shot 40% (24-60) from the field, including 35% (8-23) on three-pointers, and 73% (11-15) at the line.

H-SC will play on the road at (RV)Guilford (NC) College on Wednesday night, January 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
