Late Bucket Lifts Rowan over Johns Hopkins, 74-71

BALTIMORE, MD – Khalif Meares scored off a turnover to put visiting Rowan on top with three seconds to play and the Profs grabbed a 74-71 win over Johns Hopkins Thursday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 4-5 on the season while the Profs improve to 7-5.
 
Rowan outscored Hopkins 30-13 over the final 10:31, thanks to 8-of-15 shooting from the field and 13-of-17 from the line. Charlie Jackson converted a three-point play to stake JHU to a 58-44 lead with 10:31 on the clock. Danny Fleming answered with a three-point play of his own on the other end to spark that 30-13 game-ending run. Six different Profs scored during the run, fueled by eight points from Fleming and seven from Meares.
 
Trailing 71-67, Meares and Taz Cantey scored on back-to-back layups to tie the game with 1:34 to play. With time winding down in the game, Meares intercepted a Blue Jay pass and laid it in to give the Profs their first lead since the 13:46-mark in the first half. Following a JHU turnover on the inbounds, Fleming went to the line and made one of two shots to seal the win.
 
Rowan jumped out to a 9-4 lead early, thanks to a pair of triples from Brycen Williams and Cantey. Wyatt Eglinton Manner then scored on a floater in the lane to ignite a 20-2 Hopkins run that spanned nearly seven minutes. Jeb Williams led the Jays with five points while Eglinton Manner and Jackson scored four each during the run. Windley and Williams capped the run with back-to-back three-pointers to put JHU up 24-11, with Windley scoring the 1,000th point of his career.
 
The Profs used a 6-1 spurt to pull back within eight at the 5:21-mark. Tanti Felli then threw down a dunk to kick-start a 10-4 run to end the half as the Blue Jays led 35-21 at the half. Rowan came out strong to start the second, scoring the first six points to cut the deficit to eight less than two minutes in. The teams went back-and-forth over the ensuing four minutes and Hopkins led 48-39 with 13:23 to go.   
 
Luke Thorburn hit a pair of free throws, followed by a Williams jumper and the lead was 13 less than a minute later. Tyrese Myrick and Jackson then traded three-pointers before a Meares driving layup made it a 55-44 game with 10:49 to play. Jackson responded with his three-point play just 18 seconds later and the lead was 14. Fleming's three-point play on the other end sparked that game-ending run for Rowan.
 
Jackson led four Blue Jays in double figures with 16 points, going 6-of-9 from the field, and seven rebounds. Brian Johansson scored 12 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds and four assists. Windley added 11 points and six boards while Williams chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. Hopkins won the rebound battle, 57-24. The 57 rebounds are the most for the Blue Jays since January 20, 2024. Fleming paced the Profs with 19 points and three blocks. Williams scored 16 while Cantey added 12. Meares finished with 12 points and seven steals.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 4 as the Blue Jays make the short trip to Stevenson. Tip-off for the non-conference contest is set for 3:00 pm.
