Senior guard Henry Hinkle scored 5 straight points to wipe out an early 5-0 deficit for Ohio Wesleyan, but Hope assembled 14-0 and 15-0 first-half runs on the way to a non-conference win over the Bishops on Saturday in Holland, Mich.
After Hinkle's early 3-pointer and jumper from the lane, the Flying Dutchmen got 3-pointers from Josh Decker and Brady Miller before senior wing David Rice connected from downtown to bring the Bishops within 11-8.
Hope scored the next 14 points, with Decker starting the run with a 3-pointer and Justice Mims closing out the run with a trifecta, to take a 25-8 lead midway through the first half.
Senior post Phil Wallace had a lay-in and a 3-pointer as Ohio Wesleyan rallied with to within 27-18 with 7 minutes to play in the period, and the Bishops were still within 29-20 with less than 5 minutes remaining when the hosts took off on a 15-0 run that included 5 buckets by Gabe Quillan. Parker Hovey's jumper with :35 left in the half gave Hope a 44-20 lead.
The Flying Dutchmen shot 72 percent (18 of 25) from the field during the first half, including 6 of 11 (54.5 percent) from 3-point range.
Ohio Wesleyan rallied during the second half, with junior guard Isaac Ward and Hinkle drilling 3-pointers to help the Bishops pull within 58-46 with 11:40 remaining, but Ohio Wesleyan did not come closer than a dozen until the final 2 minutes, when a free throw by junior wing Jessee Battle and a pair of Ward free throws made it a 9-point game at 75-66. Another Ward 3-pointer made it a 77-69 contest with less than a minute to go, but Hope sealed the outcome with a pair of free throws from Eli Schoonveld.
Ward led the Bishops with 22 points, while Hinkle finished with 21 points and a team-best 5 assists, and Wallace scored 15 points. Fifth-year post Tony Carter collected 8 rebounds.
