LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted its final game of 2024 on Saturday afternoon as the WildCats faced #17 Guilford in ODAC action. The WildCats had a lead on the Quakers at the half but GC came back with some solid shooting to overtake the 'Cats and win by the score of 91-82.
Randolph drops to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the ODAC. Guilford improves to 5-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
The first 3:26 of game time saw a total of 21 points scored. Guilford had a slight 11-10 lead on Randolph with 16:34 showing on the game clock. The Quakers led 16-13 with 13:50 remaining in the period. The WildCats went on an 18-5 run to lead by double digits, 31-21, with 9:04 showing on the clock. The Quakers cut into the Randolph advantage as they brought it down to four points. A seven-point burst by the WildCats brought their lead up to 11 points, 38-27, with 3:25 to play until the break. It was 44-34 Randolph with 1:16 left but back-to-back layups by Nick Farrar made it a six-point lead for Randolph 44-38 at halftime.
In the second half, Guilford came back to tie the game 55-55 with under 15 minutes to play in regulation and took its first lead at 13:20 for the first time since 13:50 of the first half. There were three ties and seven lead changes in the next 6:13 of game time with the final lead change occurring with 6:42 left to play. Nick Farrar hit a three-point basket for the Quakers and that put them on a 14-3 run to give Guilford a 80-71 lead with 3:16 left on the clock. Randolph was able to make it a two-possession game, 84-80, with 1:32 left but GC outscored Randolph 7-2 in the final minutes to pull away for the win.
Randolph was 31-of-72 (43.1%) overall from the field and 14-of-41 (34.1%) from behind the three-point arc. Guilford made 32-of-62 (51.6%) of its overall shots and 10-of-21 in three-point attempts. The WildCats committed just five turnovers the entire game to 12 for Guilford. Randolph had an 18-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The Quakers controlled the boards 42-28.
Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) and Even Wiehe (Cleveland, OH/Nordonia) both scored 13 points to lead the WildCats. Phillips-McLoyd dished out six assists. Amari Gorham (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) added 11 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Elijah Cox (Galax, Va./Carroll County) scored 10 points.
Randolph travels to Southern Virginia next Saturday. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
