Junior Justice Mims scored a career-high 22 points for the Hope College men's basketball team, but a late Flying Dutchmen rally came up short in a 90-83 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday.
Hope pulled as close as five points during the final minute after trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half.
Whitewater produced 10 of its final 17 points over the last 3 1/2 minutes at the foul line to keep the Flying Dutchmen at bay. Hope dropped to 3-4 on the season.
Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams HS) shot 75% from the field (8-12) for the game, including 66.7% from the 3-point range (4-6).
The 6-2 guard scored 19 points after halftime and helped the Flying Dutchmen net 50 second-half points.
Mims made all four of his 3-pointers after halftime, accounting for half of Hope's makes from deep.
Three Flying Dutchmen chipped in 14 points apiece: senior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central), senior guard Josh Dekcer (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodrdge) and sophomore forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart).
It was a season-high for Hovey.
Whitewater (4-3) shot 52.8% from the field for the game and earned a plus-seven advantage from points at the foul line.
Guard Jameer Barker led the Warhawks with 27 points. Guards Luke Bara and Collin Madison added 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. Central at sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
