FREDERICK, MD – Trailing by as many as 19 on the road, Johns Hopkins rallied to defeat Hood, 79-75, in non-conference action Tuesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 4-3 on the season while the Blazers fall to 4-3.
Garrison Linton made a pair of free throws with 4:29 to play in the first half to cap a 29-7 run that saw Hood push out to a 37-18 lead. Six different Blazers scored during the run that spanned more than 10 minutes. Hopkins got back into with an 11-3 run. Wyatt Eglinton Manner scored on a driving layup with 3:14 left to get things going. Charlie Jackson followed a Jude Huseby free throw with four straight points to cut the deficit to 14. Garrett Cox answered with two from the charity stripe but five unanswered from John Windley made it a 40-29 game with just 1:13 to go. Cox had the final say of the half, draining a three-pointer to send Hood into the locker room with a 14-point lead.
Windley sandwiched a pair of triples around a Kullen Robinson jumper to open the half and it was a 10-point game less than two minutes in. Hood responded with a 6-2 spurt to push out to a 51-37 lead. The straight JHU free throws sparked a 13-7 run, that took just 3:32, as the Blue Jays cut the deficit to eight. Brian Johansson capped the spurt with an old-fashioned three-point play.
After trading free throws, Robinson hit a turnaround jumper and the Blazers led 63-53 at the 8:50-mark. Johansson answered with a pair of free throws, followed by a Jeb Williams' triple to ignite an 18-7 run that saw the Blue Jays go up 71-70 with 2:05 to play. Johansson and Williams combined for 12 of the 18 points that saw Hopkins take its first lead since the 14:39-mark of the first half.
Robinson grabbed the lead back for Hood with a jumper on the other end, but a Johansson trey with 41 ticks on the clock gave JHU a 74-72 lead. Linton cut the deficit in half by hitting one of two free throws on the ensuing possession. But the Blue Jays got a pair of free throws from Jackson and a Williams steal and dunk to push out to a 78-73 lead with 4.4 seconds to go. Cox scored on a fast-break layup to make it a three-point game, but the Blazers fouled with 0.2 seconds left, sending Williams to the line. He hit one of two shots to seal the win for Hopkins.
Johansson led the Blue Jays with a career-high 21 points and handed out three assists. Windley scored 20 points and tied his career high with six three-pointers. Jackson added 14 points, with 10 of those coming from the free throw line (10-of-13). He also grabbed six boards and dished four assists. Williams added 13 points and tied Jackson with six rebounds. Robinson paced the Blazers with 15 points, going 7-of-9 from the field. Cox finished with 14 points and Huseby added 11 points, while Jack Fricka had a game-high nine rebounds.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, December 7 as the Blue Jays visit the Swarthmore Garnet. Tip-off at Tarble Pavilion is slated for 3:00 pm.
