WAYNESBURG, Pa. (November 30) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team earned its third-straight win with a 68-55 victory over Carlow at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Waynesburg improves to 3-4 on the season while Carlow falls to 1-6.
The Jackets posted opposing season-lows for points allowed and field goal percentage against (.351). Waynesburg led for nearly 34 minutes of game time in the win.
The Celtics used an early 12-1 to build a 14-7 lead with 13:46 to play in the first half. The Jackets answered with an 11-0 run that featured eight points by PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) and a Jalen Goins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) three-pointer.
Carlow worked back within two (18-16) with 9:27 left in the half. Waynesburg answered by scoring the next 13 points to go ahead 31-16. The Waynesburg defense keyed the spurt as the Jackets forced five turnovers and the run was punctuated by slam dunks by Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) and Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights). Waynesburg carried a 37-25 lead into halftime.
The Jackets led by double-digits the entire second half. A deep three by Casey Keesee (Tipp City, Ohio / Bethel) put the Jackets ahead 59-43 with six minutes left. Carlow scored the final five points to bring the final margin to 68-55.
Baker led the way for Waynesburg with 19 points and eight rebounds. Goins had 14 points and Suggs had 10 points and five rebounds.
Davis added eight points and Rayshod Hooper (Baltimore, Md. / St. Frances) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and finished with six points.
Waynesburg finished with a 36-32 edge in rebounds and won the turnover battle 17-16.
The Jackets take on Chatham on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
